Why Is Red the Color of Love?

Love. What do you see in your mind's eye when you hear this word? A heart? A fragrant bouquet of roses? Sweet chocolates? Or maybe a teddy bear? Each of us have different connotations, however, there is a certain classic symbol of love that is common to all cultures – red.

Why color red?

Red color has many symbolic meanings. It is associated with pride, courage and gallantry, and that is why it’s present on many flags and emblems. Its intense hue attracts attention, and hence it’s often used by marketers as well as movie and music producers on posters and in advertising spots. But why do we associate this particular color with one of the strongest human feelings?

• Scientific research has shown that red color raises blood pressure, speeds up breathing and stimulates heart beat. That’s why red in clothes or makeup worn by the opposite sex fires up our body and senses.
• According to Greek mythology, a red rose is a symbol of loyalty. One version of a certain legend (a dramatic love story of a beautiful mortal young man and a deity) says that every such flower grows from Adonis’ blood watered with Aphrodite’s tears. The flower itself is mostly associated with the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite.
• In many cultures (e.g., in China and India), red color signifies purity, happiness and celebration. It’s associated with luck and good fortune; hence it’s worn during weddings.
• In ancient Rome, brides were usually wearing a red wedding veil – as a sign of love and fertility. This custom has partly survived until this very day – in Greece, Albania and Armenia.
